The IHO S-57 ENC Product Specification includes information about the data producer. This information is contained in the "Producer Code", which is a 2-character acronym and corresponding integer value.

The information is stored in:

* The file name of an S-57 cell (first 2 characters)
* The cell header (Data Set Indentification Field)
* The Feature Object Identifier Field of each feature object

The IHO codes for hydrographic agencies/organizations who produce ENC data are contained in IHO S-62 (currently Edition 2.1, June 2005). This register contains the codes for official ENC data producers.

The Open ECDIS Forum provides the capability for non-Hydrograhpic agency S-57 data producers to register their own Producer Code. To avoid any conflict with the codes of official ENC data producers, the 2-character acronym starts with a number between 1 and 9.
